Tide Siren
This continues to exercise the attention of the Parish Council. SLDC were originally hoping that it would be taken-over either by the Parish Council, or by the Coastguard Service. No mention was made of the fact that the existing equipment had been condemned and needed replacement. The Coastguard Service could not consider the proposal because of their patterns of duties, and the Parish Council does not currently have the Statutory Power.
Because of the local outcry, and the adverse publicity, SLDC has now abandoned any proposals to cut costs, by discontinuing the operation of the siren. A new system is on order and should be operational in the near future.
Elections
Only seven of our previous Councillors stood for re-election, but they were joined by Rachel Dutfield, so we have eight elected Members. Although this is not enough for re-accreditation, the operation of some aspects of the “Quality” scheme have been suspended, so we remain a Quality Parish Council, at least until towards the end of 2009.
Sometime during the next 35 days we need to co-opt the remaining three Councillors. If you are at all interested, please contact our Clerk, Peter Challenor, on 761824, or preferably on clerk@arnside.gov.uk.
Playground
Most users of the Playground will already have realised that the equipment is past its best and in need of replacement. Three designs and estimates, have been obtained, and it has been decided that the best option would be to proceed with Playdale. Parish Councils usually encounter obstacles in obtaining grants for such projects, so it is hoped that the Council will be able to work in close co-operation with the Arnside Parish Plan Trust. Anyone wishing to assist the Playground Working Group is asked to contact Councillor Sue Gibson.
