Maintenance of Footpaths.

Despite the bad press publicity, and our concerted efforts, the County Council has still done nothing to improve its abysmall programme of maintenance of public footpaths. If you are also incensed by the overgrowing conditions, please write to the Chief Erxecutive of Cumbria County Council, and send a copy to the Westmorland Gazette.

“Jubilee Gardens”

We now have ten volunteers working to keep the gardens in good order. However, we are in the midst of the frantic growing season, so there is still a need for more helpers. If you feel you can help, particularly with mowing the grass, please contact Denise Challenor on 01524-761824, or heversham@tiscali.co.uk.

Children’s Playground

Our normal Annual Safety Report was not good, and since then we have had a second opinion from Playdales, which was also not good. Sometime this month we shall receive a third opinion, this time from RoSPA. It seems inevitable that we will be faced with (a) having to take some items out of use, and (b) spending a lot of money, which we haven’t got. Get ready for an appeal!

Cemetery Chapel

Our Cemetery Chapel Development Committee (which includes residents who are not Councillors) held another Open Day, on April 24th. It was very well supported, and we might now be able to proceed with the installation of essential services, so that the building can be brought into use, on occasions other than warm sunny afternoons. Watch this space, or the Parish Council Minutes, over the next few months, to see some signs of progress (we hope).

It also seems appropriate to mention that there is a suggestion of establishing a Local History Society, to be based at the Chapel, with semi-permanent displays. Essentially, this will be independent of the Council, but anyone who is interested is welcome to contact our Clerk (clerk@arnside.gov.uk), who will pass the details to the appropriate person.
